We recommend at least 3–5 days to experience the highlights of the Black Hills comfortably. This gives you time to visit iconic sites like Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Badlands National Park, Custer State Park, and Crazy Horse Memorial without feeling rushed.
If you have more time, even better – you can slow down and enjoy some of the hidden gems and quieter places.
The most popular months are May through October. Summer offers warm weather and full access to attractions, while September is a favorite for wildlife viewing, fall colors and cooler temperatures. Not all tourist roads are open in the winter months, but the winter gives way to some spectacular sights in the area and a slower pace.
Many first-time visitors stay in Rapid City because it’s centrally located and close to the airport.
For a more scenic mountain-town experience, consider Custer, Hill City, or Deadwood. These towns are a wonderful base, but that can mean longer driving days if you are hopping around the Black Hills.
We always suggest a downtown Rapid city hotels as a good base – then you’re in walking distance to great restaurants, boutiques and centrally located for your touring days.
This depends, attractions are spread out across the region, and public transportation is non existent.
If you plan to spend your days on guided tours, fly into Rapid City and stay downtown, then you can get away without a car.

If you’re going to visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial, we also highly recommend stopping at Crazy Horse Memorial. The memorial offers a very different perspective on the history and culture of the Black Hills and is still an active mountain carving in progress.

Guided tours help maximize your time, avoid long driving days, and provide local insight, history, and wildlife spotting opportunities (and hear some great stories). Most visitors enjoy the experience more by splitting them into separate days, that way you can enjoy the other sights in either area and not miss anything!
