This route is available as a paved ride, gravel ride or combination!
Spearfish is wonderful town situated in the northern Black Hills. This ride leaves from the edge of town and meanders up the canyon on the dedicated shoulder of highway 14a through Spearfish Canyon. The road was constructed for the most part on an old scenic rail line, so the whole way up the canyon is a gradual incline, which makes the way back a gradual decline. The paved route of this ride is an out and back and is typically about 25 miles if we do the one mile gravel spur up to Rochlock Falls.
Here is a map of that route, totaling 29 miles (can be shortened) with about 1500′ of elevation:

My favorite option in this canyon if you are a bit stronger of a rider and enjoy gravel is to start in the town of Savoy (basically just the Spearfish Canyon Lodge) riding gravel roads through beautiful canyons up to Cement Ridge. This is 26 miles out and back, all up hill on the way, downhill on the way out. The clients can then ride the additional 11 miles slight downhill through Spearfish Canyon out to Spearfish. This makes for a wonderful 37 mile ride! If you are looking for a more challenging ride, we can also start/end in Spearfish, for about 50 miles and 3200′ elevation gain!
Here is a map of this route, totaling 37 miles with about 1915′ elevation gain and 3200′ loss:
