Where we go on this Badlands Tour

Badlands National Park is one of the most dramatic and unusual landscapes in North America—towering rock formations, deep canyons, open prairie, and constantly shifting light and color.
Most visitors see it from a short drive-through. This tour is designed to slow the experience down and take time at the best viewpoints, spot wildlife and learn the stories behind the landscape.
The landscapes of Badlands National Park are unlike anywhere else in the United States. Millions of years of erosion have sculpted colorful rock formations, dramatic canyons, towering pinnacles, and rugged ridges into one of America’s most remarkable national parks.
Beyond its striking scenery, the Badlands are also home to abundant wildlife, rich Native American history, and one of the world’s most important fossil beds. Visitors often arrive expecting a quick scenic drive and leave amazed by the scale, beauty, and fascinating stories hidden within the landscape.
Our private Badlands National Park tour allows you to experience the park at a comfortable pace with an experienced local guide. We’ll stop at scenic overlooks, search for wildlife, share stories of the region’s history and geology, and ensure you have plenty of time to take photos and truly appreciate this extraordinary landscape.
Whether you’re visiting South Dakota for the first time or adding the Badlands to a larger Black Hills vacation, this tour offers an unforgettable day exploring one of America’s most unique national parks.
Black Hills Tour Company guides Kevin and Melina joined CNN anchor Laura Coates to explore one of the most fascinating aspects of the Badlands – it’s incredible prehistoric fossil beds. During filming, we discover a rare fossil skull estimated to be around 33 million years old!

Travel through the heart of Badlands National Park along the famous Badlands Loop Road, stopping at some of the park’s most spectacular overlooks and viewpoints. Each stop offers a different perspective on the colorful rock formations, deep canyons, and sweeping prairie landscapes that make the park so famous. This is our core experience and you will have time to exploree at your pace.
The Badlands are one of the best places in South Dakota to view wildlife. Depending on the season and conditions, we may encounter bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, and a variety of bird species.
The Badlands preserve one of the richest fossil resources in North America. Your guide will explain how prehistoric animals once roamed this region and how scientists continue to uncover remarkable discoveries from millions of years ago.

Bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, and a variety of birds are frequently seen throughout the park.
While wildlife sightings are common, nature is unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed.
Badlands National Park is beautiful in all seasons. Tours operate in most weather conditions, though itineraries may occasionally be adjusted for safety due to severe weather or road conditions.

Many visitors tell us they discover far more about the Badlands with a guide than they would have experienced on their own.
One of the highlights of visiting Badlands National Park is the opportunity to see wildlife in its natural habitat.
The mixed-grass prairie ecosystem surrounding the rock formations supports an impressive variety of animals. Bison often graze near the road, while bighorn sheep can sometimes be spotted navigating steep cliffs and rocky terrain. Prairie dog towns are found throughout the park and provide excellent opportunities to observe these entertaining animals.
Visitors may also encounter mule deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, hawks, eagles, and numerous other bird species.
While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, our guides know the areas where animals are most commonly seen and will always keep an eye out during the tour.
Absolutely! It’s one of the highlights in the park – and when open we love to visit the fossil lab in the Visitors Center.
The colorful layers visible throughout the park were formed by ancient rivers, floodplains, and seas that once covered this region. Over time, wind and water eroded the soft sedimentary rock, creating the remarkable formations visitors see today.
The Badlands are also internationally recognized for their fossil resources. Paleontologists have uncovered fossils of ancient horses, rhinoceroses, saber-toothed predators, and numerous other prehistoric mammals that lived here between 30 and 40 million years ago.
Today, the park remains one of the most important fossil research areas in North America, providing scientists with valuable insight into prehistoric ecosystems and climate change.
Yes and yes, a thousand times yes. Families enjoy the wildlife viewing opportunities, dramatic scenery, and educational aspects of the tour. We can adjust the pace to suit younger travelers.
We find youngsters are the most excited to find fossils, climb on rocks and visit the paleo lab. A true highlight of any Black Hills Vacation.
The amount of walking is entirely up to you. Most viewpoints are located close to parking areas, and guests may choose whether or not to participate in short walks.
Likewise, if you are an active group who want to include a short hike, let us know when booking. OR see our Badlands by Bike Tour.

EXCELLENT Based on 391 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Happiness13422205233Verified Mt Rushmore touring at its finest We did two tours with Black Hills. Our tour guide, Joel was without a doubt one of the best guides we have ever experienced. He was not only knowledgeable but easy to understand. We saw places that the average tour would never see. He was good with everyone in our small group from 7 years old to 70. The booking process and the tour van were top notch. If you want a 10 star tour experience call Black Hills Tour Company.Posted on Tripadvisor Alexis CVerified Perfect Family Experience at Mt. Rushmore Our Mt. My wife and I spent the day with our guide Terry, and visited Mt Rushmore, Needles Hwy, Sylvan Lake, Crazy Horse Monument, and Custer St Park. Terry was extremely engaging and knowledgeable throughout the entire day. He picked us up at 8:30a and dropped us back at our hotel at 6:00p - he would have happily extended our tour even longer if we had asked. Definitely a great value for a private tour. Mt Rushmore & Crazy Horse exceeded our expectations, they were fantastic! Eating our picnic lunch with Terry at Sylvan Lake on a comfortably sunny 50 F day surrounded by the day before's newfallen snow was certainly a highlight. Newborn buffalo calves and the baby burro on the Custer wildlife loop were a perfect way to end the day. We would not hesitate to book with Black Hills Tour Company again.Posted on Tripadvisor Cindy CVerified Custer State Park and Needles Highway Superior full day in private tour specially tailored to our interests: wildlife loop, Custer State Park, Needles Highway all with Joel. I recommend this as a first time visit to South Dakota because without the guide, we would have never been able to experience the splendor of the area without our guide Jeff being there to give all the information and history. Jeff took us to places and showed us areas that we would’ve never picked out ourselves. He allowed us to experience the beauty of the sites such as Mount Rushmore, Custer Park and the monument tribute to Crazy Horse, and the Needles. Hailee recommend money well spent.Posted on Tripadvisor Richard GVerified Black Hill Tour It was a fantastic experience. Our guide Gina was excellent.
