The Badlands National Park transforms in the evening.
As the crowds disappear and temperatures cool, wildlife becomes more active, shadows stretch across the rock formations, and the landscape begins to glow with incredible colors.
Choose between our classic Badlands National Park Sunset Tour or extend your evening with our premium Badlands National Park Sunset & Stargazing Experience beneath some of the darkest skies in the United States.

Perfect for guests who want to experience the magic of the Badlands during the golden hour without staying out too late.
As the afternoon light begins to soften, we’ll journey into Badlands National Park to explore some of the park’s most dramatic overlooks and scenic viewpoints. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife including bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and pronghorn antelope.
As sunset approaches, we’ll position ourselves at one of our favorite locations to watch the changing colors transform the rugged landscape. The Badlands are famous for their layered rock formations, and the evening light creates spectacular shades of gold, orange, pink, and purple that make this one of the best times of day to visit the park.
Enjoy a grazing board, snacks, and refreshments while taking in the views before returning to Rapid City shortly after sunset.
Experience sunset, twilight, and complete darkness in one of the most spectacular night-sky locations in the Midwest.
While most visitors leave the park after sunset, we stay to experience a completely different side of the Badlands.
Begin the evening exploring the park’s dramatic landscapes as the changing light transforms the colorful rock formations. Enjoy wildlife viewing opportunities, scenic overlooks, and a grazing board picnic before settling in for sunset from one of our favorite locations.
As daylight fades, the Badlands become remarkably quiet. The crowds disappear, temperatures cool, and the vast open landscape takes on an entirely new character. Depending on weather conditions, moon phase, and the time of year, guests may have the opportunity to view thousands of stars, planets, satellites, meteor showers, and even the Milky Way stretching across the sky.
With minimal light pollution and expansive horizons, the Badlands offer some of the best stargazing opportunities in South Dakota. Whether you’re an avid photographer, astronomy enthusiast, or simply looking for a truly memorable evening, this experience showcases a side of the park that few visitors ever see. We either join the National Parks star gazing program, or find a private quiet corner of the park, to do our own onlooking.

Choose the Sunset Tour if:
You want an incredible Badlands experience, stunning sunset views, wildlife sightings, and an earlier return to your hotel.
Choose the Sunset & Stargazing Tour if:
You want to experience the Badlands at night, enjoy some of the darkest skies in the region, and create a truly unforgettable evening.
As the sun lowers, the Badlands shift into deep golds and long shadows — one of the most beautiful times to experience the park.
This is also a prime time for wildlife viewing, with bison, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs often more active in the cooler evening hours.
As darkness falls, the Badlands become quiet and the sky opens up. On clear nights, stars, planets, and the Milky Way become visible with remarkable clarity due to the lack of light pollution.
This extended experience lets you see the park transition from sunset to full night, with time to relax, observe, and take in the landscape after dark.
We also provide simple night sky interpretation so you can understand what you’re seeing above you.

For many guests, absolutely. Most visitors only experience the Badlands during daylight hours. Staying after dark allows you to experience the park under incredibly dark skies.
During the right moon phases and weather conditions, the Milky Way is often visible
The sunset portion of the tour still operates as normal. If cloud cover prevents optimal stargazing, guests still enjoy an extended evening experience in the park. We often tie into the National Parks stargazing program and talks from the rangers.
Yes, although younger children often prefer the shorter Sunset Tour due to the later return time. The stargazing tour often does not get back to Rapid City until closer to midnight.
Many visitors consider sunrise and sunset the best times to visit because temperatures are cooler, crowds are smaller, and the lighting is ideal for photography.
Badlands National Park is considered one of the best stargazing destinations in the Midwest thanks to its remote location, wide-open horizons, and dark night skies.
Most visitors spend between half a day and a full day exploring the park. A sunset tour offers a unique opportunity to experience the landscape during its most dramatic lighting conditions.
If you prefer a daytime outing, see our Badlands National Park Day Tour
Visitors commonly see bison, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, mule deer, prairie dogs, coyotes, and a variety of birds throughout the park.
We recommend bringing comfortable clothing, a light jacket or layers, sunglasses, and your camera. Temperatures can change quickly in the Badlands, particularly after sunset. Guests joining the Stargazing Experience should be prepared for cooler evening temperatures, even during summer.
Tours are conducted in a comfortable, air-conditioned touring vehicle designed for sightseeing throughout the Black Hills and Badlands region. Vehicle size varies depending on group size to ensure a comfortable experience for all guests.
This tour involves minimal walking. Most viewpoints are located close to parking areas, making this experience suitable for a wide range of ages and mobility levels. Guests can choose how much or how little walking they would like to do at each stop.
Yes. All National Park entrance fees are included in the tour price.
Yes. A light grazing board, snacks, and refreshments are included with both tour options. You can add a bottle of wine for $25.

Our Badlands National Park Day Tour was highlighted as we toured CNN anchor Laura Coates to explore one of the most fascinating aspects of the Badlands – it’s incredible prehistoric fossil beds!

EXCELLENT Based on 127 reviews Posted on Google Lisa TTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We took the Black Hills Half Day Tour on June 5th with Gena as our tour guide, and it was fantastic! I’d never done a private tour before, but as our first time here, we wanted to definitely get the most out of our visit through the Black Hills region and didn’t want neither my husband or I to have to worry about having to focus on the road while going around tight bends and then missing things. I will definitely say, it was well worth calling Black Hills Tour Company! Gena picked us up in a spacious van, got to know our interests and took us through all the sights, including going through the tunnels and pigtail bridges, driving through and learning the history of Needles Highway and Custer State Park, and stopping for an introduction visit to Mt. Rushmore and Sylvan Lake. Along our way, she pointed out lots of local fun facts. She stopped several times as we went through the Black Hills so we could get the best photo shots. Gena was very personable and went the extra mile to ensure we got the most out of our tour and visit. Gena asked about our itinerary for the rest of our trip and gave us great tips for places to visit during our time here. (And Gena- we did visit Spearfish Canyon and that was a great addition to our travels- thank you for the recommendation! 😊) My husband, daughter and I had a wonderful time! We all highly recommend Gena and The Black Hills Tour Company!Posted on Google Paula JoyceTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A fantastic tour of Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Needles Highway, Custer State Park and Wildlife Loop Road. Our tour guide Joel was very knowledgeable, had personal stories and references, and made our tour super fun. It was nice that we were consulted on each item of the itinerary as to the amount of time we spent at each attraction and where we wanted the focus. Joel's knowledge of the local customs and culture helped us to understand the history surrounding Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. We were able to see Bison and their offspring and a few other wild animals in the wildlife loop. The veichle was very clean and well maintained. Overall a fantastic tour!Posted on Google Jennifer ThompsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This was a fantastic tour. Highly recommend.
